Co-operation with Eni under the project MEDESS-4MS – Nov 01, 2012

Within the framework of the project MEDESS-4MS, the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre (REMPEC), the Department of Merchant Shipping of Cyprus (DMS) and the major Italian oil company Eni S.p.A (ENI) engaged a fruitful collaboration.

The well-established co-operation between Eni and REMPEC through the Mediterranean Oil Industry Group (MOIG) benefits to the project MEDESS-4MS leaded by DMS, in which REMPEC is participating, through exchange of crucial data to enable a regional oil spill risk assessment in the Mediterranean.

Between 2007 and 2010, Eni implemented the Mediterranean Safe Terminal and Routes (MEDSTAR) project, which includes GIS sensitivity mapping of the Mediterranean coastline including environmental and socio-economical data.   Eni agreed with REMPEC and DMS on the sharing of these sensitivity data, under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the three parties, thus contributing to the successful implementation of the project MEDESS-4MS.

The MED Programme which co-finances the Project MEDESS-4MS has recently emphasized in its “Cooperation stories from the MED Programme”, this achievement to promote the importance and efficiency of government and industry cooperation.
