IMO and REMPEC organized in Morocco, a National Workshop on Sensitivity Mapping in the field of preparedness for and response to marine pollution – Jul 02, 2008
Twenty-one participants from different Moroccan Departments and Ministries attended the National Workshop on Sensitivity Mapping organized by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in cooperation with the Environment Department of the “Ministère de l’Energie, des Mines, de l’Eau et de l’Environnement”. The workshop financed by the Technical Cooperation Division of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) was held in Rabat, Morocco between 2 and 4 July 2008.
The objective of the workshop was to provide to competent authorities with the basic knowledge for the development of sensitivity maps for the Moroccan coastline, to introduce the related methodology, to define terms of collaboration between the different entities involved and to agree upon an action plan for the development of the maps. Sensitivity maps will enable decision makers and operational involved in response operations to better define response strategies and enhance the implementation of response operations.
Moreover, the results of the initiative financed in the framework of the European Union cooperation programme (TAIEX) were presented. The initiative was aimed at defining a methodology for the development of sensitivity maps to be used in the field of places of refuge.
The workshop was concluded with the adoption of recommendations aimed at establishing an action plan for the development of sensitivity maps at a national level.
