National Workshop on the Ratification and Effective Implementation of MARPOL Annex VI – Dec 16, 2024
The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) organized a National Workshop in Algiers, Algeria on the 16th and 17th December, on the Ratification and Effective Implementation of MARPOL Annex VI, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean Sulphur Oxides Emission Control Area (Med Sox ECA) Requirements.
This National Workshop which was financed by the Italian Ministry for Environment and Energy Security, is a vital step toward strengthening regional efforts to reduce air pollution from ships and promote cleaner and more sustainable shipping practices in the Mediterranean region.
The Workshop aimed to provide:
- Guidance on ratifying MARPOL Annex VI
- Insights into implementing its provisions effectively, and
- An overview of the technical and operational implications of the Med Sox ECA.
Bringing together over 40 participants from national authorities, maritime experts, and stakeholders, the Workshop will reinforce the importance of collective action in addressing shipping emissions and ensuring compliance with international standards.
REMPEC remains committed to supporting the Contracting Parties to the UNEP/MAP-Barcelona Convention in achieving a greener and healthier future for our shared Mediterranean Sea.
