REMPEC holds regional workshop on MARPOL Implementation – Apr 26, 2010
The complementarity between the EU-funded SafeMed II Project’s objectives and REMPEC’s mission was highlighted during a regional workshop on the implementation of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) between 26 and 29 April 2010.
The workshop familiarized senior government officials from 19 Mediterranean countries with MARPOL Convention’s Annexes II and III to ensure their correct implementation. While Annex II relates to regulations for the control of marine pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk, Annex III regulates the prevention of pollution by harmful substances carried by sea in packaged form.
Held in Malta within the framework of the EU-funded MEDA Regional SafeMed II Project being implemented by REMPEC in ten Euromed Mediterranean partners, this regional workshop also formed part of REMPEC’s programme of activities for 2010-2011.
The four speakers were Ms Marja C Tiemens-Idzinga, Mr Ken McDonald, Dr Thomas Hoefer and Mr Alex Gerson. Participants from Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and SafeMed beneficiaries took part.
Mr Frederic Hebert, REMPEC Director, said “When possible, and in order to provide a holistic regional dimension, some SafeMed activities such as this workshop, are extended to other Contracting Parties that are not directly benefiting from the SafeMed Project.”
