REMPEC participated in the 58th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 58) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which was held at the IMO Headquarters in London between the 6 and 10 October 2008. During this session, MEPC inter alia adopted amendments to Annex VI (Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) of the MARPOL Convention, approved the draft text of a new ship recycling convention for adoption by a diplomatic conference scheduled to be held in May 2009, approved ballast water management systems, and continued its deliberations on limiting greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Of particular relevance to the work of REMPEC, was the approval, by MEPC, of the Manual on assessment of oil spill risks and preparedness and the IMO/UNEP Manual on the assessment and restoration of environmental damage following marine oil spills which were developed by MEPC’s OPRC-HNS Technical Group over the last few years.
