Strategies and Actions Plans
Mediterranean coastal States have defined objectives, priorities, issues and related measures and timetables to address marine pollution through a set of Strategies and Actions Plans.
UNEP-MAP Mid-Term Strategy (MTS)
The Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP) Mid-Term Strategy (MTS) was prepared to guide the path of MAP in protecting the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean and contribute to sustainable development of the Mediterranean Region for the period 2016-2021.
Mediterranean Strategy (2022-2031)
The vision of the Mediterranean Strategy for the Prevention of, Preparedness, and Response to Marine Pollution from Ships (2022-2031) is "A clean and healthy Mediterranean marine and coastal environment with a sustainable and pollution-free maritime sector, supported by a rigorous enforcement system and strengthened multi-sectoral cooperation, for the benefit of present and future generations." The primary responsibility for achieving the objectives defined within the Strategy remains with Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, however, to support their individual and collective efforts there must be also a collaborative, coordinated and collective effort made by all relevant regional stakeholders in the Mediterranean.
Ballast Water Management Strategy
The Mediterranean Ballast Water Management Strategy aims to establish the framework for a regional coordinated approach in the Mediterranean on ships’ ballast water control and management which is consistent with the requirements and standards of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM), 2004.
Mediterranean Offshore Action Plan
The Mediterranean Offshore Action Plan aims to define measures, which, if applied at regional and domestic levels by each Contracting Party will ensure the safety of offshore activities and reduce their potential impact on the marine environment and ecosystem.
